Alumni Spotlight: Dan McCarney

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Legendary football coach and City High alumnus Dan McCarney was back at The School That Leads this weekend. The program shared this exclusive clip to social media and plans to release more video content from McCarney’s visit in the coming weeks.

An All-State football player at City High, McCarney continued his playing career at the University of Iowa from 1972 to 1974. McCarney got his coaching start with the Hawkeyes, including ten seasons as defensive line coach under Hayden Fry.

McCarney would serve as the defensive coordinator at Wisconsin under Barry Alvarez from 1990-1994 before accepting the head coaching position at Iowa State University. There, he revitalized the Cyclone program, winning the school’s first bowl game and posting a school record for victories as a head coach.

Throughout his career, McCarney also served as head coach at North Texas and defensive line coach at the University of South Florida and the University of Florida.

A towering figure in state of Iowa athletics, McCarney represents the spirit of leadership and community pride that set City High apart.
